Scenes from our “Compound Interest for the Language Learner” workshop this weekend! π
Compound words are what we call words that are made up of smaller meaningful parts which are themselves also words (and not merely prefixes or suffixes): “cellphone” is made up of “cell” added to “phone”. We find such words endlessly fascinating because they illustrate the odd linguistic arithmetic of 1+1=1. In this workshop, we first went on a fun word-watching tour through some of the LanGo team’s favorite compound words and then analyzed different types of compound words in German, Korean, Spanish & Roviana.
Accruing some compound interest too? Join us for the next linguistics for language learning workshop in our upcoming fall session!

We are very excited to announce our 2024 fall language and culture immersion trip to Spain! πͺπΈ This program will offer Spanish language and culture enthusiasts the ultimate opportunity to learn and practice Spanish and to be immersed in the culture of Spain.
The program itinerary will include time in the vibrant capital city of Spain, Madrid, and in the cosmopolitan capital of Catalonia, Barcelona. We will also visit several other important cities and cultural centers of Spain; optional day trip destinations include the historic cities of Toledo or Segovia, and the beautiful eastern coastal city of Valencia. Our goal is to provide participants with a program filled with unique, hands-on experiences so that they can increase fluency through cultural immersion, social interaction, experiential learning, and engagement with several communities in Spain.
Participants will be able to try authentic cuisine, observe traditional customs, learn about the history, culture, and language variety of each place we visit, and interact in Spanish with our instructor team and with locals.
The 2024 Spain Language & Culture Program will be held for a period of seven days from October 7th – 13th, 2024. Registration opens TODAY and closes on May 31st, 2024 or until the participant cap is reached.

Meet our amazing LanGo-abroad lover, Charity (Caridad)!
Charity is a travel enthusiast and is a bit of a nomad; she can't stay in one place for too long! Travel is a big reason why she she wants to improve her Spanish skills.
One of Charity's favorite Spanish words is "alrededor" which sounds like you're saying "around the door" really fast, so that helps you remember its meaning. ;) Spanish strikes her as a very adaptable language. It'll adopt English words and put a Spanish spin on them. It'll take old Latin words and give them a modern twist. There are many borrowed elements but it's still a versatile, unique language. She appreciates that what you see is what you get with Spanish. Meaning, a word usually sounds exactly how it looks, and one certainly can't say that for English!
Charity is particularly excited about being able to sing along to some songs in Spanish. Granted, she still has to listen to the song at least 20 times to fully understand the lyrics, but you definitely wouldn't have heard her singing along to songs in Spanish a few years ago. Look out, Julio Iglesias!
Her ultimate goal is to have a full conversation with someone in Spanish and to be able to fully understand what they're saying to her, as well as be able to fully communicate what she wants to say to them.
Charity loves how her instructor, Marison, gives her a lot of free rein when it comes to learning Spanish. She is someone who enjoys traveling and writing stories, and so she is able to use those hobbies and interests to enhance learning and make it even more fun. She also really appreciates that Mari understands that she has a busy life outside of our lessons, and that some weeks she might be able to get in more practice than others. For this reason, among many others, she always looks forward to their time together!
Charity joined us for an unforgettable Spanish practice opportunity earlier this year during our trip to Chilean Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. π Read more about her learning journey with Spanish here: https://langoinstitute.com/meet-our-students.
